Today in the Southwest Texas Annual Conference, Mary Ann Barclay will be going before the Board of Ordained Ministry for an interview for the process of ordination as a Deacon in The United Methodist Church. Mary Ann was first denied an interview last June at Annual Conference for the sole reason of being a lesbian who just happens to be married.
I #StandWithMaryAnn because even though Mary Ann’s ordination process doesn’t affect me personally I still feel like I am being attacked as well.
I #StandWithMaryAnn because Mary Ann has brought me and others great joy and hope for the queer community inside The United Methodist Church.
I #StandWithMaryAnn because recently Mary Ann has become a resource for me as I navigate being queer and actively involved in all levels of The United Methodist Church.
I #StandWithMaryAnn because Mary Ann’s story of judgment and turmoil with the ordination process in the Southwest Texas Annual Conference needs to be told.
I #StandWithMaryAnn because Mary Ann has reminded me that change in The United Methodist Church must happen from the inside.
I offer up this prayer for Mary Ann:
You who created us and are still creating new things in us each and every day. Guide us as we go about doing your will for others. I ask you to be with Mary Ann and the Board of Ordained Ministry. May Mary Ann’s interview be well received by those in the room. Allow your Holy Spirit to be wrapped around her in comfort and support. Allow the Board of Ordained Ministry to be open and accepting of what Mary Ann has to offer to greater United Methodist community. Remind Mary Ann that she belongs, matters and is enough in your own eyes. I pray all these things in your loving and redeeming grace. Amen.
