Mary had an important calling, and we remember and celebrate it during this season of Christmas. Mary was called to give birth to Christ--to bear the Christ in a world hungry and thirsty for Christ's presence.
Mary, I believe, is thus the Mother of the reconciling movement, for that is what the movement seeks to do. Our call is to give birth to Christ in every conversation, congregation, class, or campus where we do ministry. Our call is to give birth to Christ, even when the church says there is no room for us, even when we are pushed to the margin.
May God find us faithful as we approach the task--sometimes rewarding, sometimes challenging, sometiems exciting, sometimes painful--of giving birth to Christ in every opportunity.
